Lulu’s Puppies…What A Difference A Year Makes

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO:

APOLLO, BEAN, BRADY, DUDLEY, LILLY BELLA, MAE, OLIVE, AND PAISLEY!!!!

A little over a year ago FDR took in Lulu and Angelo, a set of dachshunds in California.  Like so many dachshunds that we rescue – they were fearful and living in conditions far beneath what they deserved.  We quickly realized that we not only had two beautiful dachshunds that were in need of a new start, but Lulu was pregnant with an astonishing 8 PUPPIES!!  You can see Lulu and Angelo’s “puppy shower” on YouTube HERE.

Angelo found his furever home quickly with a California based volunteer and Lulu made her way back east to deliver her babies.

On February 17th, under the watchful eye of our Chair, Laura and her two daughters – Lulu deliver all 8 gorgeous puppies!  In rescue, we’re used to NOT knowing the full story.  To rescue a pair; find out that the female is pregnant…and with such a large litter is really uncommon.  To us, these babies are something to celebrate!

Thanks to all their amazing furever families, let’s catch up on what these little ones have been up to:

Enzo Ferrari is now known as Apollo!  He lives with his mom April, a fursibling and a few human siblings.  🙂  April reports that Apollo loves the snow, running around, rarely barks and weighs about 16 pounds now!  He loves to cuddle and plays well with his “little” sister who is only a quarter of his size!

Mae aka Mae Berries was originally known as Angelina.  Mae now lives with her mom Jenn and two cockapoo brothers Clark and Jack. Mae is a fun loving full of life love bug, she keeps her two older brothers Jack & Clark very busy and on their toes!!  Mae loves her blankets and to cuddle when she’s not driving her brother Clark nuts!

Bean’s mom kept his “birth name”.  It just fits him so well!  Bean lives with his mom Karen, a human sister and a furbrother – Joey!  Bean was supposed to be the runt of the litter but no one told him that!  He weighs in around 16 pounds.  He’s full of life, and loves to cuddle and play with his family.

Dudley the dachshund

Dudley’s family kept his “birth name” too!  He lives with his mom, Leah a few human siblings and fursibling Cooper.  Dudley…what a boy!  Each morning he and our cat play tag. They take turns starting the game and then race through the house at full speed. He and Cooper (our other dog) wrestle, chase balls and take walks together everyday. One of Dudley’s specialties is to snag socks. If there are any socks on the floor, Dudley will find them, grab them and then dance in front of me… just out of reach.  He’s such a tease! He loves to snuggle and curls up with anyone with a blanket.

Brady also got to keep his “birth name”, but his sister Paisley was known as Destiny!  Their mom Nicole only meant to adopt one of them…shh, don’t tell them which one(!!) but fell in love with both of them.  These two also have fursiblings Meadow and Beckett and all four travel as a pack.  Paisley LOVES the snow, commondeering all the toys and climbing into the dryer as mom folds laundry.  Brady is a big snugglebug who loves nothing more than stealing pillows when he’s not stealing socks off of people’s feet or barking at the dogs on Animal Planet!  They both enjoy running figure-eights through the house and pulling their mom’s ponytail to get her attention. 🙂

Dixie is now known as Olive!  She lives with mom Patty and her own herd of fursiblings.  Olive loves to chase birds, play fetch and cuddle with her family.  Patty says that Olive is now picking up her weight in chores too by hopping up in the dishwasher and “prewashing” the plates!

Lilly Bella

Roxie is now known as Lilly Bella!  She lives with her mom Donna and fursibling Sadie.  She loves to run with her sister, cuddle and get treated like the little princess that she is. 🙂

These little ones have made each of their new families SO happy!  The only thing that could cap this off – is getting Lulu her happy ending too.  You can view Lulu’s bio HERE.

A Pup-date On Emma

Emma the chocolate parvo puppy

Last week we told you about sweet Emma and her diagnosis of full-blown Parvovirus.  Though she is a peanut – weighing in at barely eight pounds – she is a trooper!

Emma is responding well to treatment for parvo, but it has made her immune system even more compromised.  Because of this, she developed a hacking cough which quickly turned into bronchitis, then pneumonia.  Emma is now on three medications to get her back in tip-top shape.

She is quite the cuddlebug and wants nothing more than to have someone pick her up, give her a cuddle and some reassurance that she’s going to get better.  Emma has become quite adept at giving those sad little stares that dachshunds do so well in order to solicit extra snuggle time!

Emma will continue to need supportive care to recover from parvo and bronchitis and any donations are appreciated. Thank you to everyone that has donated so far to Emma’s ChipIn and FirstGiving accounts!

Chase and Chance are two sweet little pups who are in the same foster home.  They have been exposed, but not shown any signs of illness.  Currently, they are in quarantine, which is set to end on Tuesday – and will be up for adoption really soon!

Dachshund Days of Summer – Parker’s Happy Ending

Dachshund Days of Summer banner

Meet Parker.  He’s four months old and just got his furever family.  In some ways – he’s a lot like the other pups that we adopt out.  He’s small, affectionate, happy and quite energetic.  However, he’s been through a lot in his four short months.

Parker the chiweenie puppy

Four months ago, Parker was one of six chiweenie puppies whelped shortly after we took in his mother Ginger.  All of Ginger’s puppies got quite sick shortly after birth with a respiratory infection.  We fought hard to keep everyone healthy – and are so grateful to those of you that contributed towards their medical bills and sent heaps of prayers. Unfortunately, three pups crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

Last month, Parker and his sisters again had to fight the dreaded respiratory infection.  This time – treatment was a huge success! Parker and his sisters got to find their furever homes.

Here’s what Parker’s new mom has to say about him:

Parker is doing great. He has only had a couple of accidents and is eating and sleeping good. We just love him. Sally (their other family dog) has been a little put out but she is doing much better.

Parker is affectionate with all of us and has just settled right in like he always belonged here. I think that is a testament to what a good job your program does for the dogs preparing them to be in a home vs being in a kennel.

Dachshund Days of Summer – Patti, Rambo & Their Paw-fect Pups

Dachshund Days of Summer logo

Patti and Rambo came to us a few short months ago as a bonded pair.  What we found out soon afterward is that they were an expectant momma and daddy-to-be!  While it’s certainly not uncommon for us to bring in a pregnant momma, it is a bit unique that we find ourselves with an ENTIRE family.

Patti had a really rough delivery – one little puppy born at home and then she needed surgical intervention to get her other three welcomed into the world.  We are so grateful for all the financial support you gave us during that emergency delivery.  Everyone is doing great now! The puppies are named Peaches, Shani, Willy and Emery. Thanks to everyone that helped name them! They are growing, playing and learning how to be housebroken.

Shani, Willy and Emery are our redheads. Like all dachshund pups, they are full of energy and affection.  Peaches is a double dapple – so she has some eye issues and hearing problems, but that doesn’t slow her down ONE BIT! If you want to learn more about double dapple dachshunds and the health risks they face, please click here.

Patti and Rambo, miniature dachshunds

Patti and Rambo are quite bonded.  Now that their pups have weaned, they’ll soon be ready for adoption together!

A Pup-date On Our Orphaned Dachshunds – PLEASE HELP!

Furever Dachshund Rescue (FDR)  was so excited when we were able to save five puppies in South Carolina after their mother died during birth.  For days the puppies thrived! Molly, our beagle surrogate mom, took them on as her own.  They were growing bigger and stronger and then the worst happened.  The little piebald boy, which we named Jack, started having respiratory problems.  He was rushed to the vet where he was diagnosed with Fading Puppy Syndrome and his foster mom held him while he crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

Orphaned dachshund puppies

Chocolate and tan dachshund puppy from NCThe other puppies were doing well until this morning when another puppy started struggling. We are determined that we are not going to lose this little chocolate and tan girl with a beautiful white patch on her chest!

She is now at Ocean State Hospital in Rhode Island receiving blood work and a cat scan.  We fear that this has something to do with the mother while giving birth.  We are hoping you can help!!!

Your tax deductible donation today can help this little orphaned puppy and her siblings with testing.  PLEASE MAKE A DONATION!!!

DONATE TODAY – there are several ways to donate! FDR is an all volunteer rescue, no one gets paid to work for the rescue. All donations are tax deductible.

Dachshund Days of Summer – Pattycake’s Progress

Dachshund Days of Summer

Dachshund Days of Summer is going strong and there’s still PLENTY of time for you to join in and help us meet our goal!

After talking about the lovely Ruby two weeks ago and our five orphaned puppies last week, we’re back to talk about a beautiful longhaired dachshund that garnered quite a bit of attention when she first joined our ranks.  This week we’re giving you an update on Pattycake.

Patticake the longhaired senior dachshund

Do you remember this sweet little face?  Pattycake joined us from a shelter in Georgia just over a month ago. At the time, we knew nothing more than that she was an underweight senior girl who had vision and hearing problems. How can you say “no” to that little face?!

We have since learned that little Miss Pattycake is estimated to be around 15 years old! Despite her age, finding out that she’s deaf, has her fair share of vision issues, some arthritis and separation anxiety – she is spunky! Her foster mom has nicknamed her “Miss Independent”.

Given Pattycake’s issues – she likely won’t leave her foster mom’s house.  But that’s OK!  Pattycake’s happy ending IS her foster mom’s house. While her happy ending is a bit different from what we had originally hoped for…it’s no less HAPPY! Here’s what her foster mom has to say:

“Pattycakes doesn’t like cuddling too much.  She loves sleeping in her beds.  She doesn’t pay much attention to my personal senior dog, Toby, that I adopted from Furever Dachshund Rescue (FDR).  She is getting friendlier with me but still quite independent.

Pattycakes is very sweet and will follow me from room to room when she is awake.  She will stay with me until she crosses to the Rainbow Bridge. I hope that my home will bring her comfort and love until that time.”

If you or someone you know would like to be a foster – please fill out our application.

Dachshund Days of Summer – Ruby’s Story

Posted on

Dachshund Days of Summer logo

As part of our Dachshund Days of Summer, we’ll be sharing with you each week a dog that we couldn’t have helped without you!  Yes, YOU!

Last week we talked about Cricket.  Did you miss our post?  Click here and catch up!

Many people will remember back in the late winter, we found a 9-year-old black and tan miniature dachshund at the Charleston Animal Society named Maggie.  Maggie was covered with a horrible skin infection, rotting teeth and a mouth filled with hair impacted in her gums from licking.  Here is the photo of her at the animal shelter. With that sweet face, we just HAD to help her!

Black and tan dachshund

We did a fundraising campaign for her and thanks to all of our generous supporters, Maggie was able to see the veterinarian and get her skin issues resolved!  She was also able to have a few teeth pulled and start to get her mouth on the way to recovery.

In the meantime, one of our fabulous supporters fell in love with her and quickly went from watching her progress to deciding to adopt her.  Paperwork was completed and she left the troubles of her southern roots behind her.   She connected with her forever family in the Northeast where she was given a new home and a new name (Ruby) to start her new life!

Black and Tan Ruby with her new family

Ruby has been a blessing and a joy for our family.  She unfortunately continued to have oral problems, but after two more surgeries she is well on the road to recovery.  She is truly one of the most loving dogs I have ever met, and wants nothing more than to snuggle with you or offer kisses, as you can see in the photo.  She was the perfect match for our other rescue dog, Camille – often we will “catch” them snuggling on the couch or in a dog bed together.  She has a typical doxie personality and entertains us with her antics each and every day.   She loves “treat time” and particularly enjoys blueberries, chasing them around the kitchen floor!  She sleeps under the covers every night, snuggled up VERY tight to her people.  This is our first experience with a senior dog and we would make the same decision over and over again – she seems to have an extra layer of love to give!

I want to send out an extra special thank you to everyone who contributed financially to her care, to everyone who transported her back in April to New England, and especially to all of the supporters and donors who keep this wonderful organization going so that dogs such as Ruby have a second chance in life.

Cuddle time for Ruby and her mom

Nothing makes us happier than seeing a dachshund or furever friend make it into the home they were meant to have!  We know that you’ve gotten really invested in some of our little ones and who doesn’t want to hear about what happens after the surgery/therapy and adoption?!

Have you read about Dachshund Days of Summer – our new fundraising campaign yet?  If not, you should! Seriously, go now!  We’ll wait…

You’re back? OK, good!

Now that you know a little background on how many dogs we’ve been able to help and the different tiers of donating, let’s get personal. To our organization – each dachshund or “furever friend” is a short, fuzzy, family member who doesn’t speak clearly.  By and large, our biggest measure of success is getting to see the wagging tails, hearing the happy howls and feeling the snuggles & kisses of each dog that we’re able to help.

We wish we could say that we get by on love alone. However, we haven’t come across a veterinary practice yet that is willing to let us pay our medical bills in puppy kisses. Darn it! Don’t they know that dachshund kisses are worth more than gold?!

The simple truth is that we need YOU just as much as the dogs need us.  For example, little Cricket was our internet star with quite a few people following her progress. Do you remember her?  You can read about little Cricket here and here. She needed a lot of medical intervention – something we wouldn’t have been able to provide without wonderful donors like you! Look at Cricket then, and look at her now in our “Happy Tails” section! Isn’t that wonderful?!

HELP THESE PUPPIES!

Each day Furever Dachshund Rescue (FDR) faces issues with the dogs that we rescue. Sometimes it is behavioral and other times it is medical. But without your help, we can not continue to rescue and help these sweet furbabies make it to their furever home where they will be safe from abuse, starvation, and neglect.

Meet Shannon, Ashley, and Parker, these sweet babies were just born in March but their little lives didn’t start great. Their mother, Ginger, was rescued from a shelter and then we found out she was pregnant. We worked hard to make her healthy before the puppies were born but we were too late. When the puppies were born, they had respiratory problems. THREE, yes THREE of the litter died already but Shannon, Ashley and Parker survived. Everyone at FDR was saddened by the three who crossed the Rainbow Bridge so early in their lives but happy for the three that survived.

Well .. that happiness is now in danger. Shannon, Ashley and Parker all have pneumonia. They are struggling to breathe on their own. They lay in an oxygen tent trying to fit for their lives and with your HELP – WE CAN SAVE THEM!!!!

We are asking everyone to donate to make sure they will have the chance to run, play and be puppies at a furever home.

DONATE TODAY – there are several ways to donate! FDR is an all volunteer rescue, no one gets paid to work for the rescue. All donations are tax deductible.
